This study addresses the discursive construction of the event known as the church burning or the church case in the traditional and alternative Chilean press. The theoretical framework corresponds to French Discourse Analysis, specifically discourse nomination theory; the corpus is comprised of texts that were published in the traditional press (namely, in the newspapers El Mercurio and La Tercera) and in alternative press (Mapuexpress, DiarioUChile and El Ciudadano), from 2016 to 2020. Results showed that, on the one hand, both traditional and alternative press underscore the violent nature of the facts presented and, on the other, the alternative press grants more contextualization of the facts, especially regarding the church case and the protracted hunger strike of the Mapuche defendants.
