Currently, in Latin America, we are immersed in a new cycle of privatization of education. Although this does not necessarily respond to the traditional strategies that emanate from neolibera-lism in its most orthodox version, it ended up being quite efficient, administratively, and culturally colonizing educational institutions through the so-called New Public Management (NPM). In this article, we will specifically discuss the consequences of the implementation of NPM regarding to the establishment of teaching careers in Latin America. We are convinced that both international organi-zations and governments in the region have promoted the establishment of regulatory bodies based upon individual meritocracy, standardized assessments, and accountability to generate a change in the habitus of those who practice the profession.
