Urinary incontinence (UI) is a prevalent condition in the population of elderly adults, affecting both sexes. With the aging of the population it will be a health problem of increasing relevance. Its pathogenesis is complex and multifactorial, so it is essential to know the underlying pathophysiological aspects in order to make an adequate diagnosis based on the clinical history, physical examination and complementary tests requested in a rational manner. The treatment of UI for elderly adults does not differ much from the treatment of younger population. However, particular emphasis should be placed on identifying comorbidities, medications, neurological and psychiatric disorders that may be contributing to the UI. Full advantange of conservative management should be taken, having special considerations with the use of some drugs and carefully indicating surgical treatment to selected patients.
