In this paper, we propose that some elements of Euripides’ Phoenissae’s dramatic structure can be read as a metaphor of the stasis which took place in Athens during the Peloponnesian War in 411 BC, and that these are coincident with Thucydides’ description of the stasis in Corcira. This proximity reveals a common vision about the period’s social and political situation, focused on the moral and social dimension of stasis’ and war’s effects. We develop our argument through comparative analysis of passages of both texts.
