The national symbols, embodied on the most diverse object supports, have been fundamental for the development of modern nations, since they have conveyed essential values, traditions and discourses for national identities. Under this framework, the purpose of this article is to analyze the way in which flags, national emblems and cockades were incorporated into everyday objects and the discursive consequences that this had in Chile from the beginning of the 19th century to the mid-20th century. The assumption of the article states that the national symbols would have been inserted in the objects as ornamental resources, at the same time that they would operate as banners of the national ideology that would be updated every time the object was used, stressing its domestic and commemorative character, as well as its superfluous appearance and the official semblance given by the emblem. The theoretical-methodological framework of study considers the analysis of different pieces bearing emblems belonging to the collections of different Chilean public institutions based on the categories of invented traditions , banal nationalism , decorative arts and intentional memorial value .
