The aim of this research is to comprehend the perceptions of the cemeteries' workers about death. The problem has been tackled from a theoretical perspective that combines the Durkheimian sociology of religion and the Weberian theory of modernisation. The method was based on life stories, given its potential to capture changes in the gravediggers' beliefs since they became employees of the cemetery. The field work took place in Parque del Sendero Cemetery of Temuco and Padre Las Casas Cemetery (Chile). The perspective employed was essential as it made possible to show that the workers have rationalised partially the death, and that this rationalisation depends on how much the death is rationalised in their work place.
