In Chile, during its first years of independent life, a violent earthquake ruined the two main cities of the country. This phenomenon was unleashed in a society with little cultural background with respect to earthquakes and was used by the conservative aristocracy as a tool to overthrow the authoritarian regime established by the ruler of the time and recover the privileges that were taken from them during this process.
