This article analyzes the articulation of local powers in a frontier society, as was the case of Concepcion, in the ancient kingdom of Chile, focusing on the reconstruction of municipal institutions and their relationship with the organs of monarchical power during the most critical years of the Bourbon reformism. We begin by analyzing the characteristics of the municipal corporation during the last quarter of the eighteenth century, to later delve into its composition, as well as the different social practices that characterized the actions of these individuals at the end of the old regime. At the same time, we analyze the appearance of the intendants and their effects within the municipality, placing special emphasis on the power conflicts that involved both institutions. Finally, in the conclusions, we highlight the evolution and the weight that these disputes had during the years that followed the imperial crisis, facing towards the independence processes.
