Higher Education Institutions in Mexico face different challenges, based on the strong expansion of enrollment and coverage in recent decades. However, at present the main challenge is quality, in a context of a strong development of accreditation and quality assurance systems in Latin America, and due to the reconfiguration of the General Law of Higher Education of 2021. This article analyzes the advances and challenges faced by universities in Mexico based on the evolution of accreditation and quality assurance processes, to identify the main factors in this area that impact institutions in a highly complex context. The study uses a qualitative approach applying the method of documentary analysis from the collection of scientific sources, laws on education and the review of the reports of the official sites of organizations related to Mexican higher education. An analysis of the higher education system in Mexico was carried out, where the evaluation and accreditation mechanisms and procedures were identified, aimed at increasing quality, which respond to the modifications generated in the quality standards in higher education.
