Chronic pain after cesarean is a common problem, underdiagnosed and undertreated. In international studies, it has an average incidence of 18% with a clear increase in patients with associated risk factors. In Chile, there are no multicenter studies that evaluate the incidence or the factors that condition chronic pain after a cesarean section. Chile currently has a caesarean section rate of 45%, well above the OECD average. Considering data on cesarean sections in Chile, the percentage of patients who would suffer from post-cesarean section chronic pain and the cost to health of patients with chronic pain, we calculate that in Chile this problem could have a monthly economic cost to the health system of $3,476,745 dollars. This, in addition to the physical, mental and social consequences in young patients of childbearing age and active at work. Chronic post-surgical pain depends on several factors, some of which may be modifiable, such as preoperative anxiety, pain expectations or perioperative pain management. It's important we know the incidence and conditioning factors of chronic pain after cesarean so we are able to make guidelines and recommendations adjusted to the local reality and also so we can review the real applicability of international guidelines in our country.
