The article analyses the origins of the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Oia in the central years of the twelfth century, in the context of the ecclesiastical and monastic reforms that were spreading across Europe during that period. The analysis also takes into account the political circumstances derived from the proximity of the incipient frontier between the kingdoms of Leon and Portugal.
