This book corresponds to an updated and synthesised version of my doctoral thesis defended at the University of Oxford, under the supervision of Leigh A. Payne, and evaluated by Alan Angell, Heather Hamill, and Brian Loveman. The most appropriate way to return their wise advice and generous recommendations is by publishing these reflections that we have discussed in detail for several years.
