The internal conflict in Peru during the period 1980-2000 altered both sociopolitical and religious structures in the Andes and Lima. The evangelical churches, especially pentecostal churches, attracted the Andean people from the South-Central Peruvian Andes, the same people who suffered most from the consequences of the war. The forced ousting and quick reaction of the National Evangelical Council of Peru strengthened the emergence of religious services held in Quechua. In a society and a city marked by broad ethnic, racial and social class gaps, services in Quechua gave visibility to a thoroughly neglected ethnic population. In addition, evangelical churches competed with Sendero Luminoso to reclute the same people in areas of conflict, both urban and rural. These churches were one of the few spaces open to Andean Quechua-speaking people to reorganize sociopolitical and ethnical structures; and in this way they acquired religious, social and political legitimacy.
