Objective: To analyze the forms of configuration of Social Work through the history of the profession in the Atacama Region, from the discourse of the professionals who practice or have worked in the region, collected during 2016. Methodology: Research from the interpretative paradigm, qualitative approach, narrative in nature. In-depth interviews and focus groups with seventeen practicing and retired professionals selected by heterogeneous sampling and convenience were applied. Results: Milestones of the profession and presences and absences are identified that have defined our participation in social processes in the local context and that allow this discipline to emerge and be maintained. Conclusions: In this way, it is possible to suggest that Social Work in the Atacama Region has been determined by the national context of the time and, at the same time, determined by dynamics of social functioning and regional economy, marking the mediator mark.
