This article attempts to theologically understand the phenomenon of vocation from the thought of Karl Rahner. The German theologian approaches the vocation as an individual's knowledge that a distinct way of life follows the divine will for him. The itinerary through various areas of his theology supports and deepens this understanding. The human being is a gracious hearer of the Word, which is spoken to him personally in the deepest part of himself and in Jesus Christ. To that Word, the human being responds freely through his acts, which define his identity in a definitive way and in the face of God. Thus, Christians carry out their vocation in a particular following of Jesus specific to each person. Although vocations are always oriented to the Church's community, this does not rule out possible conflicts between charism and institution.
