The goal of this research was to describe the mental health of children and adolescents affected by wildfires in Chile. Through a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study, post-traumatic stress, suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, and stress were measured in 292 adolescents (51.6% women), whose age ranged between 11 and 19 years old (M= 14.47, SD= 2.05). These adolescents were directly affected by the wildfire called ‘Las Máquinas’, considered the largest fire in the history of Chile. The results show high prevalence of post-traumatic stress, suicidal ideation, anxiety, depression, and stress in the surveyed youth. In addition, a higher prevalence of each of these mental health indicators was observed in females. It is concluded that a significant number of adolescents who directly experienced the Chilean wildfire, characterized by its unusual release of energy, intensity, and destruction show mental health problems, with the female gender being the most affected. Although, due to the scope of the study, it cannot be concluded that these mental health problems are due to the wildfire, the empirical data provided allows to describe the phenomenon in adolescents who experienced this disaster and thus make comparisons with the prevalence shown by other studies.
