The circulation of Spanish music in colonial America has been dealt with in various publications, from Stevenson's classic works to more recent studies. Regarding the viceroyalty of Peru and particularly Lima, however, the known data are limited to the eighteenth century, while the seventeenth remains in almost total darkness. To contribute to filling this gap, this article studies a cargo ship that was sent from Spain to Lima in 1689, whose inventory is kept in the Metropolitan Cathedral. On one hand, its interest lies in its exceptional nature in Peruvian area and the richness of the music it contains: Latin works by composers such as Capitan, Patino, and Galan; villancicos and related pieces; theatrical music; and tientos for organ, some of them by Juan del Vado. On the other, its study makes it possible to know in greater depth aspects of viceregal culture at the time, such as the circumstances that allowed the transit of the repertoire across the Atlantic and the links between the music of written tradition and social prestige. To verify this, a large corpus of sources preserved in various archives will be used.
