The aim of the present article is to establish the fact that the Chilean political party Union Democrata Independiente (UDI), political expression in favour of trade unionism, arose and became strong on account of a clearly outlined strategy designed by Jaime Guzman. The strategy of trade unionism is to create a right-wing party embedded in the social base. This process is studied using the strategic formulation theories by Henri Mintzberg (2003), which is cross-checked with Angelo Panebianco's theory of party models. As a hypothesis, we state that UDI arose, grew and developed as a result of a clearly designed strategy that led unionism to its organization as a political party, despite its initial anti-party position. Currently, UDI is the most important right-wing and one of the most influential parties in the Chilean political system.
