Crime and lack of public safety have been recently become matters of municipal discussion in Chile. There is a wide territorial and socioeconomic variety in the 346 bureaus, making it necessary to carry out a differentiated study of historical crime rates and to draw trends and relevant conclusions. The present descriptive study looks at official historic data in the largest bureaus on offences of greater social connotation, domestic violence and victimization, and proposes a Global Crime Index for them. The results identify a number of bureaus in Santiago with the worst indexes and other cities in the country. The study is unique as a longitudinal data analysis of the latest fourteen years and contributes to an overall view of the phenomenon and could be used to improve municipal public security policies.
