This article explores the gender representations and practices of male and female university students with respect to men and domestic chores from the angle of feminist social psychology, and a socio constructionist approach. We investigate men's participation in work in the home, the everyday space historically and traditionally associated with women. The methodology was qualitative, with 15 students who participated through semi structured interviews: 7 male and 8 female on different courses in different higher education institutions in the city of Valdivia. The results show that the young participants had a clear view of the sexual/genderised division of work. Although they understand that domestic chores are a shared responsibility, they recognise that we are in a process of socio-cultural change, and these incipient changes are manifested more in discursive representations than in everyday practices. The challenge is to advance towards co-responsibility, stressing on the one hand the importance of these activities for the social reproduction of everyday life, and on the other the responsibility of higher education institutions in the promotion of cultural change.
