This paper presents the context in which the univocal character of the concept of `being' appears as a more satisfying answer than analogy to the question about the natural knowledge the human being can attain of God in this life. In order to make the metaphysical implications of this doctrine -that emerged in a theological sphere-more evident, Aristotle's discussion with Parmenides regarding the multiple senses in which 'being' is said, is also presented. This controversy serves as a point of comparison, through which we intend to demonstrate that the close relation between being and language is a valid reading key to understand Scotus' position regarding the general notion of being and univocity in particular.
