Information on the biology and food habits of Scelorchilus rubecula is wanting. The diets of 41 individuals of this terrestrial bird species captured in three zones of the temperate rain forest region of southern Chile (38-degrees-42-degrees-S) were investigated analyzing their stomach contents. We recorded the diversity and abundance of invertebrates and identified the seeds of local plant species present in the stomachs. Coleoptera (83%) and Hymenoptera (75%) were the most frequent insect orders in the diet of the three bird populations. Amomyrtus luma was the most frequent of the fleshy fruits consumed by this species. The seeds found in 66% of the stomachs and the variety of invertebrates found in 95% of the stomachs of the birds from all three populations confirm that this species is an omnivore. The relative importance of fleshy fruits and invertebrates in the diet of S. rubecula may depend on seasonal or regional changes in the abundance of these resources in the temperature rain forest of southern Chile.
