In this article, we review the capacity of adverbs ending in -mente to influence in the representation of actors, events and historical processes, understood as the aboutness (Lambrecht 1998) or the referential base of the sentence, in two Chilean official human rights violation reports. The starting point of analysis is adverbial meanings described in the traditional bibliography (Kovacci 1999; Rodriguez Ramalle 2003; NGLE 2009), where alethics -supposedly-, domaines- juridically-, manner -terribly-, enunciatives -unfortunately-, evidentials -empirically-, focals -especially-, quantifiers -entirely-, metatextuals -literally- and temporals -immediately- are featured. These meanings are enquired as part of the strategies that allow historians to evaluate linguistically the social experience and to organize valorative prosodies (Martin-White 2005).
