The use of real estate assets as collateral for financial services has been a key factor for the financialization of the world economy. Likewise, there are reasons to focus attention on the relationships between finance and land, as this is a non-depreciable fixed asset. From the point of view of political economy, different researchers have reported a growing financial intermediation of land. In this context, this work has investigated the participation of the financial sector in the land market of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile. Participation levels are estimated and then attention is focused on the financialization of real estate via leasing. The results confirm a high financial participation in the land market but also in other real estate; and a growing use of leasing -by insurance companies- as an instrument to reserve large vacant urban plots.
