The aim of this article is to show that language, even in its materiality, is constitutive of public space, understood not as a homogeneous space but as one modelled by exclusions and resistances that are also effects of speech. In order to do so, I will be using a certain notion of performativity as analyzed by Hannah Arendt in The Human Condition in connection to language and public space. I will then show how Frantz Fanon views public space as not homogeneous but one that performatively enacts exclusions through its compartmentalization.
