The aim of this article is to review the main debates surrounding the Mexican municipality over the Twentieth Century. Specifically, this paper is interested in analysing the role of the process of consecutive re-election in these debates. As we argue throughout the paper, the recent political reform, which introduces this re-election, provides an opportunity think critically about this level of government, which is struggling to retains its place within a Mexico that is no longer the country of the early twentieth century.
