Wine has attached sacred connotations that distinguish it from other alcoholic beverages. This liturgical component explains, among other things, its presence in some special religious ceremonies, its relevance or the links connecting this drink with the priestly caste of different creeds and beliefs. The purpose of this article is to conduct an historical tour that highlights the liturgical and ceremonial symbolism of wine and the value that it has acquired in European and Middle Eastern cultural traditions. To achieve this, we intend to make an historic journey to collect and clarify, albeit schematically, religious practices and traditions that the ancient Semites, the classical period Greeks, Christians and some Muslims developed around this beverage.
