The experiences systematized and interpreted in this article occur in the Xukuru Indigenous Land, located in the Northeast region of Brazil. Nowadays, approximately eleven thousand people self-declare themselves Xukuru, living in the rural area of the territory, but also in nearby urban areas. Like other ethnic groups in the country, the Xukuru are dealing with severe food restrictions, at the same time acquiring and suffering with health problems linked to a poor modern diet. In this context, Xukuru sociopolitical entities strive to influence empowerment and intervention in matters related, among other things, to the local food culture and the valuing of native food. The results of this case study, a diverse process resulting from the research and extension work carried out between 2011 and 2016; demonstrate the need to think about the food heritage as a strategy for food and nutrition security from a holistic perspective of internal strengthening of the communities. The endogenous actions put in place by the Xukuru do Ororuba people show high potential, becoming a reference for other research experiences and social intervention in the subject. In this sense, it is vital to highlight the importance of the pedagogical approach in this type of strategies and the need to include a view linked to one's own cultural path and identity, reinforcing the scope of cultural autonomy.
