The issue of the meaning of intonation, whether as a phenomenon of language or speech, has been one of the most debated aspects in recent decades. This paper aims to study the communicative value of the intonation patterns of Cuban Spanish with an approach based on the Complexity Theory; which makes it possible to interpret the illocutionary and modal dimensions of interactional speech acts from the confluence of prosody with the rest of the means of expression of the language and contextual factors. The starting point is the empirical analysis of a sample of statements/speech acts of oral academic discourse, to which perceptual, acoustic and semantic-pragmatic methods are applied, starting from the system-discourse relationship as a theoretical-methodological principle. The study carried out shows the use of 6 different types of intonation patterns, coded in Cuban Spanish, which maintain a certain stability in their fundamental prosodic features, although they show variability in their semantic-pragmatic functions.
