Based on a longitudinal cross-sectional analysis we discuss the relation between regime support and future levels of democracy in Latin America. Our results show that levels of polyarchic and liberal democracy negatively affect citizen support for the regime, not the other way around as previous studies propose. This could be explained by the development of critical and demanding attitudes among the populace in countries with higher levels of democracy.
