The objective of this article is to analyze the impact of labor conflicts on the elections of 1940 in Puerto Rico and the quest by workers of new organizations for the political and labor struggle with which to boost their interests to meet their needs and improve their living conditions. In the first three decades of the twentieth century, this role was fulfilled by the Partido Socialista (PS) and the Federacion Libre de Trabajadores (FLT). However, during the economic crisis of the 1930s, there is a transformation in these institutions with the electoral pact of the PS with the Partido Union Republicana (PUR) and the triumph of the Coalicion Republicana Socialista in the elections of 1932 and 1936. Between 1933 and 1940, the expectation of workers to better their living conditions through the action of PS and FLT is not accomplished because the political-partisan interests are put before their well-being. From this perspective, it is established as hypothesis that workers begun to observe - at least for a period of time - the Partido Popular Democratico (PPD) and the Confederacion General de Trabajadores (CGT), as alternatives organizations for the political and labor struggle in Puerto Rico.
