De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii (5th. Century A.D.) is a late antique work whose generic pertaining is still today a matter of controversy. Most scholars agree in considering De nuptiis. as a menippean satire (Relihan 1993; Shanzer 1986), while others consider that the model of the menippean satire is employed here only as a didactic strategy, with no major consequences for the interpretation of the work (Petrovicova 2010). I uphold the first position, framing De nuptiis. as a menippean satire under the type of Anatomy (Frye 1957; Bajtin 1984). This paper aims to a study of the main characters of De nuptiis (Mercurius, Philology, Martianus and Satura) from the viewpoint of the parody, a main feature of menippean satire, as a constructive resource of the characters in the work. This way, it is our objective to prove that De nuptiis is not merely formally ascribed to menippean literary genre, but it is also the basis on which the whole work is constructed.
