RELATIVE AGE IN CHILEAN ELITE ATHLETES ACCORDING TO SPORTS DISCIPLINE, SEX AND SPORTS PERFORMANCE

Abstract



Introduction: One of factors to consider in sport selection and talents selection is the relative age effects. Aim: The aim of this study was evaluate the relative age in elite athletes selected in the High Performance Center, Santiago, according to sport disciplines, gender and sport performance. Methodology: We analyzed the data of 1210 athletes who were attended in High Performance Center between 1997 and 2017. The athletes came from different sports disciplines which were divided into Combat Sports, Sports with Ball, Strength and Endurence and Art and Precision sports, with excluded of paralimpic sports. The age of the athletes varied from 8 to 49 years old, average 19,9 (SD 5,3) with 59.4% men. With the data of month of birth and we organizing athletes in 4 quartiles. The statistical analysis was carried out through Chi square. Results: No relative age effect was observed in the overall sample, however there was a slight decrease in those born in the 4th quartile, with a total of 23% of the total births, without significant differences between the quartiles (p=0.4) without variation when analyzing by gender and sports performance. Strength and Endurence sports showed an increase of those born in the first quartile (28% of all births) and a decrease of those born in the last 3 months of the year (19.7%), without significant differences between the groups (p=0.09). In combat sports there was also a slight increase in those born in the first months of the year (27%) and a decrease in the 4th quartile (23.9%), which is not significant. Conclusion: No significant relative age effect was observed in high performance center athletes. There are differences without statistically significant in those born in the fourth quartile in strength and endurance sports and combat sports, without differences by sex or sports performance.
