This article analyzes the evaluations that Fidel Castro, the highest spokesman of the Socialist Revolution in Cuba, makes of the entity "culture" in his speech known as "Words to the Intellectuals" of June 30, 1961, in the National Library of Cuba. This pronouncement is crucial because it projects the expected relationship between the culture and political direction of the Revolution. Fidel Castro's statement on that occasion marked a before and an after in the cultural policy of Cuba. The objective of this study is to characterize the representation and the constructed valuation of the notion of culture on the part of the Cuban leadership, based on the theoretical and methodological tools of functional systemic linguistics, specifically, the model proposed by the Appraisal Theory (Martin and White, 2005; Oteiza, 2009, 2017; Oteiza and Pinuer, 2012). Among the results, we observe that the evaluation made of the culture relates to the favorable judgment made of the Revolution, in such a way that it tries to legitimize the first one, from the prestigious appraisal made of the second.
