In a context of knowledge-based economies, a key factor for regional development are the new institutional arrangements that allow the interaction of virtuous channels, between private actors (industry), government and universities. These interactions can be considered in themselves as a social innovation if they are framed in models such as the Triple helix of innovation. This model tends to generate a climate and attitudes that allow coordination between industry, government and academia to create an environment of innovation that allows the development of emerging companies. In this context, the role of the Academy faces new challenges to its traditional role of generating knowledge and training, developing a more effective role of transmission and collection of innovation opportunities for the private sector, but it is also a link between the government and private companies. The Vegetable Extension Center of the University of Chile, represents an example of implementation of this model, where in its two years of operation has positioned itself as a linker and facilitator among the actors of the plant industry of the Central Valley of Chile, for its part. On the other hand, it has developed an extension methodology that allows the knowledge generated by the research centers to be carried out in an applied manner to respond to productive needs. The lessons learned are related to the need to promote applied research, reinforce a spirit of collaborative work among different agents and the need to include topics related to rural extension in professional training.

| Cultiva UChile was born at the end of ? ? ? ?, under the aegis of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Chile, co-financed by CORFO and organized through its management carried out by two academics: an agrarian economist and a vegetable specialist. The center’s management is supported by an advisory board composed of representatives of the public sector linked to the sector, representatives of the productive world and international cooperation organizations based in Chile. The consultative council oversees the general guidelines of the actions of the center, proposing improvements and promoting virtuous links in the territory. The work team consists of ?? professionals with different areas of agronomic specialization, economic and management, image and communications, organizational strengthening and laws. All of them were trained in agricultural extension methodologies. The extension agents are supported by academic researchers from the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences of the University of Chile and by academic researchers from the University of Wageningen, UC Davis and the National University of Costa Rica. The Center has ? action lines: The first action consider specialized consultancies that involve productive, organizational and collaborative networks, management, marketing and business models and the incorporation of TIC’s, encompassing process, product, organizational and commercialization innovations. This working model involves the co-construction of knowledge in conjunction with producers based on participatory work from the identification of innovation opportunities, the co-creation of solutions and the execution of them, which allows a better adoption of them. The second line of action is aimed to strengthening human capital, focused on the execution of training programs for the actors participating in the innovation ecosystem. And the third line of action is aimed at the general and institutional public in order to disseminate the knowledge and experience generated and to establish new collaboration networks that allow the complementarity and synergy of the actions of the different actors present in the territory. The establishment of these lines of action was based on the research carried out during the first year of establishment of the Center that allowed knowing, listening and understanding the vegetable growers, identifying and getting to know the different actors of the vegetable system, their networks, areas of competence and detect thier needs as well. Subsequently, prototypes of services were generated, which were tested in a pilot manner, which were adequate according to the evaluation of results obtained, generating the current services of the different lines of action of the Center. |
