Cuiabá Mine (Anglogold Ashanti) is located at Sabará, at the northwest portion of Quadrilátero Ferrífero - Central region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The underground gold mine is currently operating down to 1200 m depth, adopting the sublevel stoping as the main mining method. Design of sub-level stoping layouts (sublevel intervals, stope geometry and pillar sizes) requires consideration of several factors including orebody width, inclination and strength. This paper describes the methodology and the results of two charts developed for Cuiaba mine: One chart is used to determine sill pillar thickness between mine panels and the other is used to estimate expected geotechnical dilution for given stope dimensions and cable support. Nearly a thousand idealized three-dimensional models were run in 3-DEC (Itasca) to produce the design charts. Finally, the charts were validated through examination failed and stable pillars within the mine as well as stope hanging wall performance, resulting in good correlations.
