My aim in this text is to find some ideas that serve to develop an understanding of practical necessity within Kant's moral philosophy through a discussion, primarily, with Scarano's interpretation. The latter seeks to establish some kind of identity between practical necessity and theoretical necessity, thereby reducing the former to a purely logical form, thus neglecting the properly practical character that also constitutes it. The key to my alternative proposal is the mention of holy will in Kant's explanation of what it means for the moral law to be valid for every rational being. This mention helps us to understand, at least initially, that practical necessity is that with which a holy will would act in accordance with the moral law. In our case, since in addition to reason we have inclination as a determining ground for action, we do not necessarily act in accordance with the moral law, but we ought to do it, so that we are necessitated by the moral law.
