Considering the press as the main channel for the communication of political ideas and the primary scenario for public debate during the process of development of Liberalism, this paper explores the way Chile's two main newspapers, El Mercurio de Valparaiso and El Araucano saw the 1830 July Revolution in France, and its implications for domestic policies in Chile. The analysis revolves around two main ideas, both of which rest on the notion of order as main tenet of the conservative regime that was to continue over the following decades: first, the way the July Revolution was perceived in relation to national politics; second, the writing of the Chilean constitution and the need to overcome the period of political instability that began with independence, ending with the diplomatic recognition of the new republic.
