Assessing organizations in terms of the maturity of software development activities is an interesting topic as it not only provides clues about the actual state of organizations, but also the next steps for improving processes. Assessment and the next steps require a reference model or framework. In this article, we present our experience and some interesting lessons learned from using the SEMAT Kernel for assessing a software development department at an important Chilean public agency.
