The nine papers in this special section focus on photovoltaic module and sub-module level power electronics. Grid connected photovoltaic energy systems have experienced an explosive growth over the last decade, with a cumulative installed capacity surpassing the 400 GW milestone as of 2017. Among PV system configurations, distributed module-level converter architectures can lead to a higher energy yield by mitigating partial shading, persistent shading (soiling, snow, bird droppings, and fallen leaves), mismatch, and aging, through a higher maximum power point tracking (MPPT) efficiency. Also, distributed electronics might be the key for implementing diagnostic and prognostic actions at a module level. Among these configurations, microinverters (also known as ac-module inverter), which connect a single PV module to the grid, and PV power optimizers, which are dc-dc converters performing the MPPT function at a module level, have attracted the academic and industrial interest in the last decade. So much so, that both microinverters and dc-dc power optimizers are commercialized by tens of companies around the world, with a great variety of circuit topologies, which comprise combinations of one or more power stages, interleaved converters, resonant converters, topologies with and without isolation, etc.

| Samir Kouro (S’04–M’08–SM’17) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electronics engi-neering from the Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria (UTFSM), Valparaíso, Chile, in 2004 and 2008, respectively. In 2007, he joined the Electronics Engineering Department, UTFSM, as a Research Assistant, and has served this institution in different positions, currently as an Associate Professor. From 2009 to 2011, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, ON, Canada. He is a Principal Investigator of the Solar Energy Research Center and Titular Researcher of the Advanced Center of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, both centers of excellence in Chile. He has coauthored one book, seven book chapters, and more than 160 journal and conference papers. His research interests include power electronics, control, renewable energy conversion systems (photovoltaic and wind), and electromobility applications. Dr. Kouro was a Guest Editor for five special sections in IEEE journals and one for IET. He was an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems of Elsevier in 2016–2017. He has been included in the 2018 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list. He was the recipient of the 2016 IEEE Industrial Electronics Bimal K. Bose Award for Industrial Electronics Applications in Energy Systems, the 2015 IEEE Industrial Electronics Society J. David Irwin Early Career Award, the 2012 IEEE Power Electronics Society Richard M. Bass Outstanding Young Power Electronics Engineer Award, the 2015 Second Prize Paper Award of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS, the 2012 IEEE Industry Applications Magazine First Prize Paper Award, the 2012 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS Best Paper Award, and the 2008 IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine Best Paper Award. |
