| A discussion of this project has to be set against recent diplomacy in Central America. Several Central American states maintained diplomatic relations with Taiwan rather than switch allegiance PR China, as the US did in 1973. While, surprisingly, Costa Rica switched sides to PR China in 2006, mainly due to economic interests, Nicaragua remains a partner of Taiwan and not of the PR China: Nicaragua has a FTA with Taiwan. President Ortega, in spite of his left-leaning ideological orientation, maintained the diplomatic support of Taiwan due to its consistent financial support through development projects, frequently criticized as “checkbook diplomacy”, as well as private Taiwanese investment. Diplomatic and personal differences with the Chinese leadership dating back to the 1980s also hindered a closer relationship with China ( Rodriguez, 2013 ). |
