Newborns, have been frequently treated as if they do not sense pain in spite of evidence on the contrary. Certainly newborn infants do feel pain and they need analgesic treatment when submitted to painful stimulus. The neurobiology of pain development, clinical researchs related to newborn's response to pain and the pharmacology of relevant analgesic and sedative drugs at that age are described in this review.
