This presentation, divided into two articles, is focused on the language spoken by Gypsies: Romani. Specifically, we propose a grapheme alphabet for the variant spoken in Chile. This proposal is within the framework of the researches about dialects of gipsy language spoken in Chile and Argentina made by the linguists Alvaro González and Gastón Salamanca. Such researches include phonological, morphological and syntactic levels. In this first article, we present a brief ethnographic introduction about gypsies from Chile, the aims to achieve in this research, reference framework used, pertinent phonological and morphological considerations for a graphemic proposal, the proposal in itself and some preliminar conclusions. In a second article, we present a comparison of our proposal with other grapheme alphabets, four oral tales about gipsy tradition transcribed according to the proposed grapheme alphabet, and some final considerations and future projections. © 2008 Instituto de Estudios Humanísticos "Juan Ignacio Molina" Universidad de Talca.
