During the middle of the 19th century, the neighborhood of Lastarria was founded, eventually surrounding Vera Cruz Parish in 1857. However, it was not until the years 1872 through 1910 that the neighborhood of Lastarria came into its own, due in part to reconstruction at Santa Lucia Hill, the creation of the local forest park, and the construction of the National Palace of Fine Arts. It was at this time that the first celebrities, including Victoria Subercaseaux, former Chilean President Pedro Aguirre Cerda, and José Victorino Lastarria invigorated the town with a new intelligentsia, along with others such as Nemesio Antunez, Camilo Mori, Luis Orrego Luco, Jorge Edwards and Miguel Serrano who brought the arts to the city. Later, in the 20th century, structurally engaging and appealing buildings and homes were built reflecting the best in modern Chilean architecture. Architects such as Duhart, Bolton, Larrain Garcia-Moreno, Prieto Casanova, Kulczewzki, Sasso left their mark on the city. Revitalization was once again experienced in Lastarria when in 2001 and 2002 Cafes, Galleries, Designer Stores, Music Stores and Restaurants were introduced, bringing new life to the city.
