Abstract

Chile has been recognized internationally for its economic, political and social achievements. In the economic and political spheres, Chile has achieved economic stability, the consolidation of democracy, free trade treaties and respect for the state of law. In the area of social welfare, there have been advances in education, health, housing and culture. All of these factors place Chile in a privileged position within the region. In the cultural area, the Cultural Industry (books, musical and audiovisual) in Chile for the first time contributes 1,3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), considering 2007-2008, superior to the fishing sector (1,02%), agriculture (0,66%) and textile industry (0,78%). If we take a closer look at the art market, UNESCO statistics show that this sector has grown one thousand per cent in the last fifty years. No other investment or financial mechanism is as profitable. The art market works as an investment and a stable unit at times of inflation, crisis, war, and other circumstances. This panorama has a direct impact on the movement and development of the local art market. However, in Chile, the art economy is a complex world. There is an old regulatory framework for visual arts, but the possibility exists to expand within the new global economy. The massification of the Chilean art market has been slow and highly informal in its evolution. This article attempts to assess and show the general state of the visual art market in Chile. It also aims to show that there is an opportunity for cultural producers to collaborate with visual artists in order to further the art market.
