Background: Among risk factors (RF) for breast cancer (BC) development, some of them are considered invariable, such as age, breast cancer family history, reproductive history, etc., and we named them conventional risk factors (CRF). There are other RF, related with cultural habits and health care, that can be modify to diminish their impact on BC development, such as obesity and sedentarism. We named these latter emergent risk factors (ERF) due to their prevalence increment. Objective: To record the prevalence of CRF and ERF in a sample of postmenopausic breast cancer patients and its possible association with the evolution of their illness. Methods: 50 postmenopausic breast cancer patients from gynecological services of two different hospitals of Buenos Aires City (Argentina) were interviewed. We registered weight, height, waist circumference (WC), personal and familiar clinical history. Serum levels of cholesterol, insulin and estradiol were also meassured. Results: CRF: family history 20%; late menopause 4%; early menarche 27%; nulliparity 10%; no breast feeding 20%. ERF: overweight and obesity 70%; sedentarism 86%; abnormal WC 80%; hypercholesterolemia 65%; hypertension 32%; hyperinsulinemia 20%; hyperestrogenemia 60%. Conclusions: Most of postmenopausic breast cancer patients did not present high incidence of CRF, but we detected an elevated percentage of ERF. We emphasize that the association of hyperinsulinemia, obesity and hyperestrogenemia in postmenopausic breast cancer patients could result an important topic in understanding abnormal responses to hormone treatments and illness evolution.
