From 2000 to 2006, the Inforsa mill in Nacimiento, Chile, produced approximately 600 t/day of newsprint on two paper machines from a furnish of 100% TMP made from fresh Pinus radiata logs. In 2000, the mill began to encounter dusting at the dry end of the paper machines. Examination of the dust revealed high wood resin content. The root cause of the problem was determined to be a dysfunctional mill white water system, related mainly to poor TMP thickening. The mill adopted interim dust abatement measures involving changes in wet-end chemistry, adding bentonite clay mixed with cationic polymer. A permanent process solution was arrived at by installing a pulp washing system / hydraulic seal immediately after TMP thickening. The project scope included a disc filter, two (parallel) pulp washing screw presses, re-engineering of the mill white water distribution providing for greater separation of white water loops, and installation of heat exchangers to flatten the mill temperature profile. As a result of this project, the dusting problem was solved, the wet-end addition of bentonite / cationic polymer was terminated, retention aid dosage was reduced by 50%, hydrosulphite addition was reduced by 30%, and paper machine efficiency increased by 1%.
