An optics professor at the University of Chile and ten pedagogy students has started a project in the year 2008 in order to educate elementary school children about light and optics. Several experiments that were involved in the program included recyclable and low-cost materials that were easy to mount. The students constructed camera obscuras from potato-chip tubes and a home-made laser with a paper towel tube. The students produced experimental kits in 2009 that would be used in the workshops in six selected schools of central Chile, mainly in Santiago. The participating teachers were asked to display the relevant poster in their classrooms before a new topic was introduced. DVD that included all of the audiovisual has been produced material and given to each participating teacher for free. The training gave teachers a chance to familiarize themselves with the experiments so that they could teach students with confidence such as the task of dividing the class into appropriate work groups required a previous knowledge of the students.
