Abstract

Chronic pain is a frequent sequelae in patients, who have suffered a work-related injury. The aim of the present investigation was to assess the frequency of chronic pain in different kinds of injuries suffered by patients with a work-related accident and assessed by a Medical Disability Evaluation Committee once treatment had concluded. 614 patients were evaluated during 2007. Clinical records were reviewed and final outcome assessed by a thorough physical examination. Demographic data, diagnosis and sequelae were registered. Classical statistical measures were used for data analysis. In the total sample, 543 patients were male (88%), average age 43.6 years (range 17-82). 276 patients were blue collar workers (44.9%), 228 patients suffered chronic pain (37,1% of the sample). Demographic data of patients in pain were similar to the total sample. Depending on the type of injury, chronic pain appeared more frequently in different kinds of fractures, head injuries, burns and low back pain post lumbar surgery. It is important to note that from 202 fractures, 97 (48%) remained in chronic pain and from 78 head injuries, 36 (46.2%) remained with post traumatic headache. From 22 burns, 12 (54.5%) continued in pain. Chronic pain is a frequent sequelae in patients after a work injury. Depending on the type of injury, some patients experience more chronic pain than others. This fact should be taken into account in order to take appropriate actions and corresponding medical measures. © 2009 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
