The action of four frothers on the motion of bubbles close to the generation point at an orifice (capillary tube) was studied using high-speed imaging. The results show that bubbles accelerate to reach a maximum velocity at a given time depending on frother type and concentration, followed by deceleration and then oscillation about a mean velocity. A relationship between bubble shape and velocity is observed: the more spherical the bubble, the slower it rises, which is in agreement with recent literature. The frothers exert different degrees of shape stabilisation but the correlation with velocity remains. Possible impact of bubble shape in flotation is discussed.
